Mangrove Trees

Earth Day Might Be Over, But KULA's Commitment Continues!

What African Food Culture Means to Us Reading Earth Day Might Be Over, But KULA's Commitment Continues! 4 minutes Next KULA Tradeshow Round-Up: Q1 2024 and Looking Ahead!

Hey Fam!

Earth Day may have passed, but at KULA Foods, our love for the planet is a year-round thing! We wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news about the positive impact we're making in partnership with Veritree, a fantastic organization helping us plant trees and empower communities.

KULA x Veritree: Planting for the Future

Thanks to you, our amazing community, we've already surpassed our initial goal and planted a staggering 1,500+ trees together! That's the equivalent of filling 27 studio apartments with leafy goodness. These trees will go on to capture a staggering 373 tonnes of CO2, which is like taking 81 cars off the road for a year – A powerful testament to the collective impact we can make.

But that's not all. Planting these trees also creates 3.0 work days for local tree planters in Mteza, Kenya. That means we're directly supporting the community while nurturing the environment. Talk about a win-win!

The Power of Mangroves

But these aren't just any trees. We're focusing on planting mangrove trees in Mteza Creek, Kenya. Mangroves are the unsung heroes of the coast, often referred to as the lungs of the coast. They play a vital role in the health of our planet:

  • Essential habitat: Mangroves provide a safe haven for a vast array of marine life, from fish and crustaceans to birds and mammals.
  • Natural guardians: Their intricate root systems act as a natural barrier, protecting coastlines from erosion caused by waves and storms.
  • Climate warriors: Mangroves are champions at storing carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas.
  • Community lifelines: Coastal communities in Kenya rely on healthy mangrove ecosystems for their livelihoods. They provide essential resources for fishing, and the restored forests will create new income streams through sustainable harvesting practices.

Sadly, these vital ecosystems have been under threat for years due to overexploitation, habitat loss, and development. By supporting mangrove restoration, we're not just planting trees, we're investing in the future of the Kenyan coast and its communities.

Our Pledge: Planting a Greener Future

Here at KULA Foods, we're dedicated to nourishing not just your body, but also our shared environment. That's why we're excited to announce a brand new initiative – planting 1,500 trees this year!

A Message from Our Founder

Asha Wheeldon, Kula's Founder and CEO, knows firsthand the importance of these Kenyan ecosystems. "Being able to help restore that ecosystem and create opportunities for the local community means the world to me," she says. "Sustainability has always been a huge part of our mission, and we're excited to bring you all along for the journey with us."
