The Scotch Bonnet BBQ Sauce itself is comprised of main ingredients such as chili peppers, onion powder, smoked paprika, cinnamon, tomatoes, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and, of course, scotch bonnet.

Scotch bonnet itself is a chilli pepper variety that originated in the Caribbean and typically grows an average of 2 inches in size. A little squished looking, it’s thought to resemble a Scotsman’s bonnet, thus the name Scotch Bonnet.

While the pepper starts off green, it eventually turns red, presenting a beautiful orange colour as well during maturity. Some scotch bonnets will also turn different green shades while maturing as well.

What Does a Scotch Bonnet Taste Like?

Known for a more sweet, fruity flavour, scotch bonnet flavour references often include mentions of tastes of tomatoes or habanero peppers, but with emphasis on the sweetness part. But, what’s most appealing about the scotch bonnet isn’t just the taste, it’s the heat; and goodness does it pack a lot of it for such a sweet pepper.

How Hot is a Scotch Bonnet?

On the SHU (Scoville Heat Units) scale, Scotch Bonnet lands between 100,000 and 350,000 - an extra hot chilli pepper!

For comparison, here are where some of your other favourite peppers land when it comes to SHU:

  • Jalapeño: 2,500 - 8,000
  • Thai Chili Pepper: 50,000 - 100,000
  • Carolina Cayenne Red: 80,000 - 125,000
  • Habanero: 100,000 - 300,000
  • Scotch Bonnet: 100,000 - 350,000
  • Ghost Pepper: 1,000,000
  • Carolina Reaper (World’s Hottest): 1,500,00 - 2,200,000

Needless to say, with that much heat and its unique flavour, it’s ready to kick your favourite dishes up a few notches, especially from within our tangy BBQ sauce.
